They are usually depicted in profile and some feel this is because part of the Manaia is in the spiritual world and part in this.  They are worn to guide and protect.

Hei Tiki

These are commonly called Tiki by New Zealanders. It's an ancient symbol, but is by far the least understood, so there are a number of legends about it's meaning.  One theory is that is represents Hine-te-iwaiwa, a celebrated ancestress associated with fertility and virtue.  A Tiki was often given by the husband's family to a new bride to help her conceive.  Some tribes buried the Hei Tiki with their wearer and later retrieved it to be handed down to the next generation to be worn.  This is how the mana (importance) of the Tiki continued to increase.
Some say he came from the stars and that he was the first man of the world.  He is often depicted with webbed feet which suggests a strong link to the creatures of the sea.  It is considered to represent ones ancestors and brings good luck and protection.
Tiki was respected as the teacher of all things and the wearer of this symbol is therefore seen to possess clarity of thought, loyalty, great inner knowledge and strength of character.
